Compress an image to a target file size

Somewhere has a hard limit — 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB. Instead of guessing at quality, tell this tool the ceiling and it searches for the best quality that fits.

How to compress to target size

    1. Drop in the image that is too large.
    2. Enter the target size in kilobytes.
    3. Click Compress to target. The tool tries qualities and reports what it found.
    4. Download the result, or read the note if the target was not reachable.

Why this image tool is private

The search runs entirely in memory, re-encoding the image repeatedly until it fits. No copy is ever sent anywhere; the search is your own processor doing the work.

Other tools in this category upload your file to a server, process it in the cloud, and return a download link. That means your document sits on someone else's disk — often with a retention window measured in hours. Here, the file is read by your browser, transformed in memory, and saved straight back to your disk. You can watch it happen in the live check above: the counter for files uploaded stays at zero.

    Frequently asked

How does it hit an exact size?
It encodes the image at a range of quality levels and picks the highest one that lands under your limit. That takes a few moments on a large image, because several encodings are produced and compared.
What if it cannot reach the target?
It reports the smallest size it could achieve and offers that file. If you need to go smaller, reduce the dimensions as well — pixel count is usually the dominant factor, more than quality.
    Will the quality suffer?
Possibly, and the tool tells you the quality it settled on so you can judge. A modest reduction from a generous original is usually invisible; pushing far below the natural size will show artefacts.
Why does this take longer than normal compression?
A single compression is one encoding. This tool performs several, narrowing in on your target, so the work is a multiple of the normal case. It is still typically a second or two.
