Put page numbers on a PDF

Add page numbers to a PDF with control over where they sit, how they are worded, and which number the count starts from. The numbers are added as real text, so they are searchable and selectable afterwards.

How to add page numbers to pdf

    1. Drop in the PDF you want numbered.
    2. Pick a position, a format such as 1 of 24, and the number to start from.
    3. Set Skip first N pages if the opening page is a cover that should not be numbered.
    4. Click Add page numbers. The numbered copy downloads.

Why this PDF tool is private

The numbers are drawn onto each page as text and the document is re-saved — a local operation with no upload step. The document is never transmitted, so a confidential report stays confidential.

Other tools in this category upload your file to a server, process it in the cloud, and return a download link. That means your document sits on someone else's disk — often with a retention window measured in hours. Here, the file is read by your browser, transformed in memory, and saved straight back to your disk. You can watch it happen in the live check above: the counter for files uploaded stays at zero.

    Frequently asked

Are the numbers real text or an image?
Real text, drawn with an embedded font. You can select them, copy them, and search for them afterwards. Clicking a number in a PDF reader will not jump anywhere, though — they are page furniture, not links.
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Set Skip first N pages to 1 and the first page is left alone. Numbering still starts from the value you chose, so the second page can be numbered 1 or 2 as you prefer.
Can I continue numbering from a previous document?
Set the starting number to whatever the next value should be. For a second volume that follows a 40-page first volume, start at 41.
Will this work on a scanned PDF?
Yes. The numbers are drawn as a new layer on top of the existing page image, so it does not matter whether the original page contains text.
Do the numbers show in the sidebar thumbnails?
They are part of the page content, so yes — the thumbnail for each page includes its number.
