See what a PDF says about its author

PDFs carry fields most people never see: who created the file, which program produced it, and when. This tool shows you what is recorded in a document before you share it.

    How to pdf metadata viewer

    1. Drop in the PDF you want to examine.
    2. Click Read metadata.
    3. Review the fields. Anything empty is simply not recorded in that file.

Why this PDF tool is private

This tool only reads. It never writes to your file and never uploads it — which matters here, because the metadata you are inspecting is exactly the information you would not want to hand to a stranger.

Other tools in this category upload your file to a server, process it in the cloud, and return a download link. That means your document sits on someone else's disk — often with a retention window measured in hours. Here, the file is read by your browser, transformed in memory, and saved straight back to your disk. You can watch it happen in the live check above: the counter for files uploaded stays at zero.

    Frequently asked

Why is the author field empty?
Most PDFs simply have no author recorded. Scanners usually produce files with no metadata at all, and many export tools leave the fields blank by default.
What does the Producer field tell me?
It names the software that made the PDF, and often the version. Seeing Ghostscript or a word processor name here is normal; it tells you how the file was generated rather than anything about its contents.
    Can this remove the metadata?
This particular tool only reads. Use Strip PDF metadata to produce a cleaned copy.
Is the metadata visible in a normal reader?
Usually it is hidden behind a document-properties dialogue most people never open. It is present in the file regardless, which is why a file can reveal more than it appears to.
    Are the dates reliable?
Treat them as hints. The creation date is set by the software that wrote the file and can be wrong, especially after a file is converted or re-saved.
